Sunny Tyndrum Weekend

3-4 June 2023

How lucky we were with the weather to be over in the West for a warm and sunny DHC weekend - most unusual! 6 of us gathered in Tyndrum staying at the By The Way Hostel and Campsite, bang on the route of the West Highland Way. Sandy, Robert S, Graham and Alan stayed in the hostel whilst Chris and Gordon stayed in their camper vans. The midges were out in the mornings so we were all very glad not to be camping with the West Highland Way walkers, who unsurprisingly were up and off very early!

With a large variety of nearby Munros, Corbetts and Grahams to climb, the group split to climb their own target hills.

Before joining us on Friday afternoon, Sandy had already walked the 3 Grahams near Bonawe between Loch Etive and Loch Creran.

On Saturday....

After a slightly delayed start (no more comments here but water and poles were involved) Graham and Alan dropped off Chris for the start of his big walk, then continued north on the A82 toward Ballachulish where they climbed the corbett Meal Lighiche.

Chris just about survived the round of 5 corbetts in an anti-clockwise direction comprising Beinn Odhar, Beinn Chaorach, Cam Chreag, Beinn nam Fuaran and Beinn a Chaisteil. With a total ascent of 2050 metres and 23 km distance this was quite a day with stunning views all round. Not surprisingly he was in bed very early that night!

The photos don't do it justice but here are a few.

Gordon and Sandy climbed Beinn Donachain from Glen Orchy. Beware : the 'book' route uses a bridge that has been removed and the forest tracks have become overgrown. On the return we waded the river rather than fight through the undergrowth.

Robert continued to add to his munro tally by climbing Beinn Achaladair and Beinn a Chreachain. He enjoyed a cool drink at the Bridge of Orchy hotel on his way back to the hostel.

The Saturday evening meal was taken at the Real Food Cafe which has a very extensive fish n chip menu and a well managed queuing system but everyone just seemed happy to get the calories and beer down whilst sitting in the sun.

Sunday....

Alan and Sandy walked up Fiarach, which Gordon had climbed on Friday, a nice easy half day outing that gave great views down to Tyndrum and Crianlarich as well as the local Munro's. Alan also managed to leave his lunch in the hostel fridge!! Just to add to the water bottles & poles on Saturday!

Robert met his weekend target by climbing Beinn Mhanach.

Chris walked from the hostel and after passing the Cononish gold mine he climbed Beinn Chuirn making another nice half day outing.

Gordon had a leisurely day on Meall Odhar and Graham returned to his birding activities in Glen Clunie.

One of those rare walking weekends when the weather remained warm and sunny the whole time.

Chris
