Invergarry Weekend : 29 to 31st May 2026

This was the weekend to replace the planned Kinloch Hourn trip (the road looks like it will be closed until at least Sept 2026).  There were 9 of us on the trip and we stayed at the Saddle Mountain Hostel.

The Week Before.....

The weather during the week leading up to the DHC Invergarry weekend was fantastic. Jane managed to get a couple of days doing two Grahams near Loch Maree.

Friday

David managed to get some hills done on Friday. The objective was the Loch Lochy Munros Meall na Teanga and Sron a Choire Gharbh.  There has been a lot of activity for the Coire Glas Pumped Storage scheme near the start of the walk at Kilfinnan.  A Wild Boar was lying next to the gate where cars were left – it looked like it hadn’t been there very long.

The Great Glen Way has been temporarily diverted slightly to avoid the civil works, but the alternative track up the side of Loch Lochy is a parallel route and is very obvious. After a 3km walk up to the Cam Beallach, Meall na Teanga was climbed first, with a drop back down to the beallach and up to Sròn a’ Choire Gharbh. The wind picked up during the day, making progress slow, and fortunately these hills are rounded and there wasn’t any ridge walking involved which would have been a bit more hazardous!

We all met up at the Saddle Mountain Hostel in Invergarry – very pleasant accommodation.

Saturday

The weather forecast for Saturday wasn’t great with showers forecast that would increase in frequency during the day, however it turned out OK with most of us having a nearly dry day.

David, Sandy and Ian (Sandy’s friend from Australia) headed to do two Munros in the Loch Cuaich area. Work on the road to Kinloch Hourn was still ongoing – the first signs said the roadworks were weekdays only, but further up the glen there were a couple of ‘Road Closed’ signs. These were considered but it was considered that the ‘weekdays only’ sign took precedence! There were two other vehicles parked at the start point who must have reached a similar conclusion.

They made their way up the well-constructed Stalkers path towards Gleouraich in the (unexpected but welcome) sun, fully justifying Ian’s selection of shorts! They  were rewarded with views towards the Rough Bounds of Knoydart as they made their way up the hill.

From the summit of Gleouraich they  had superb views of the South Shiel Ridge, with surprisingly few people visible.  The view towards Spidean was also inviting.

However as they made their way across the Munro Top Craig Coire na Fiar Bhealaich the cloud closed in, and it became wet and damp; windy enough for Ian to don his overtrousers; sadly the visibility dropped to about 50 to 100 meters, so they lost the views of the rest of the ridge.  They  made it to what they thought was the summit of Spidean Mialach,  After taking a compass bearing, and following their instinct and noses, they  headed down a ‘grassy’ slope and eventually back to the car.  Did they make the summit ???

Hamish  went for a bike ride along the south side of Loch Garry to Garrygualach from Carraidh Bridge.

Chris, Roddy, Graham and Bob did the two Corbetts, Geal Charn and Meall na h-Eilde, from the east end of Loch Arkaig.  There’s a good track up the valley from Achnasaul  before a bit of heather bashing and some faint paths to get up onto the shoulder of Geal Charn.  Two good Corbetts with great views in all directions.

Jane did the Graham Glas Bheinn, also from the east end of Loch Arkaig.  We were using a WhatsApp group to keep track of everyone’s plans and to notify when we were off the hill, so when Jane posted to say that she was on top of Glas Bheinn, Bob, Chris, Graham and Roddy waved from the other side of the valley.

On Saturday evening we’d booked a table for a meal at the Glengarry Hotel which was excellent

Sunday

The weather forecast for Sunday was for showers in the morning and more persistent rain in the afternoon, so most people opted for an easy day or a short hill on their way home.

Graham did the Corbett, Carn a’ Chuilinn, above Fort Augustus.

Hamish met up with his cousin and did a bike ride along the Caledonian canal.

Bob and Jane headed down to Spean Bridge and then in to Glen Roy where Jane did the Graham, Leana Mhor West, and Bob did the Corbett, Beinn Iaruinn.  It was jackets on/off, on /off as the occasional shower passed through and then jackets on as the showers got more persistent, fortunately both were on the descent by then.

Chris and Roddy headed down the Great Glen to Glen Loy and did the Corbett, Beinn Bhan. Unfortunately they got caught in  a torrential downpour on the summit.

Participants :

Jane, Bob, Hamish, Graham N, Chris, Roddie, David, Sandy and Ian (from Australia)
