Only three DHCers were able to make this summer outing. Gillie, Moira and Sandy were rewarded with a fine day and far-reaching views.
The route was a simple circuit, walking south-west and upstream alongside the Baddoch Burn. This, more commonly, would be the normal way to climb An Socach but rather than striking north and climbing we headed south-eastwards. Leaving the path to cross the burn by a small bridge we the climbed up the heathery slopes of Carn a’Gheoidh, one of the Glenshee Munros.
We had seen no one on the way up but on reaching the summit the hoards transported by the chairlift from the glen appeared. We enjoyed an easy walk along the tops and past Loch Vrotachan to reach our second Munro of the day, Carn Aosda. We elected to miss out The Cairnwell.
The best part of the day, in my opinion, was the walk back down the long ridge, over Carn Chrionaidh with great views down Glen Clunie and we had the hills to ourselves again. A lovely descent over short cropped grass. We were fortunate to spy a pair of mountain hares just below the summit of Carn Aosda and then a large herd of red deer crossed the ridge a few hundred metres in front of us.
