Glas Maol & Creag Leacach day walk

Glas Maol & Creag Leacach - Mystery Walk 30 November 2019

On a gloriously bright and cold morning (-8 °C in Braemar) ten of us, Ali, Gillie, Gordon, Graham N., Moira, Robert, Sandy, Steve, Susan, Tim, plus two dogs, Dan and Dylan, assembled in the lay-by beside the A93, above the foot of Meall Gorm.

En route Gillie, Gordon, Susan and Steve had stopped for coffee/chocolate and croissants/butteries in the Bakehouse, Crathie…….a great way to start a hill walk!

Although we started in the shadows, as we processed north along the intermediate ridge of Leacann Dubh, the sun appeared above Glas Maol in time for our banana stop at 1100. The views to the west and down Glenshee were spectacular.

Leaving the ski tow behind at Meall Odhar, we climbed the corrie wall onto the summit of Glas Maol. The visibility was phenomenal with the Northern Cairngorms highlighted by the dusting of snow. With no wind, and not a cloud in the sky, we lunched at the cairn but quickly cooled. So, making most of the sunshine we travelled south to reach the rocky ridge of Creag Leacach.

From there it was a slightly slippery descent onto Meall Gorm. From here we could see more or less our entire circular route,

A beautiful 5.5 hour day on the roof of Scotland. Concluding with a visit to the Bakehouse, Crathie for tea and scones, for the six who had not stopped on the way out!
