Glen Lyon Weekend

October 20/21st 2018 Glen Lyon

Only 4 people signed up for the Glen Lyon weekend - Iain Wright, Graham Rebecca, Alan Watson and Gillie Hagger. On Friday morning Iain, Alan and Gillie headed off to Glen Lyon to climb two munros en route - Meall Corranaich and Meall a'Choire Leith.

We saw a ptarmigan and a flock of unidentified MBJs. The clouds lifted as we climbed and despite the wind we managed the two in good time and made our way to the cottage in Glen Lyon that Gillie had booked on Airbnb. Graham travelled over on Friday morning and despite recovering from 'man-flu' (Graham's description) he managed to climb Meall nan Subh. On his walk he saw a ring ouzel - yaaaay.

On Saturday Graham set off to walk Stob a'Choin on his way home (not well enough to manage a Sunday walk too). He experienced much rain but saw 2 ravens and 2 ring ouzels! We three set out from the cottage to walk the 4 Carn Mairg munros on the north side of Glen Lyon.

Starting to walk up Carn Gorm

The beginning of the walk was within spitting distance from the cottage! We met some deer stalkers on the way up but they were accommodating and told us which area to avoid and we were allowed to continue on our way. We entered cloud near the first top and remained in it.

...until we'd finished and were on the way down with very brief tantalising views of what we were missing. The only wildlife we saw were 5/6 ptarmigan.

On Sunday we decided we'd done enough walking and the weather was still rather inclement so we had a lazy departure and headed home via visit to the Fortingall Yew and had a fantastic breakfast at a cafe called Habitat in Aberfeldy - recommended!

All in all a great weekend. The cottage was lovely and brilliantly situated.

We watched three squirrels from the kitchen window as well as gold finches and chaffinches; Glen Lyon was just beautiful in its autumn colours.
