Fisherfield Weekend

1-3 September 2017

The DHC camping weekend in Fisherfield was enjoyed by Iain, Moira, Robert (S), Gillie, Alan, Ruth, Susan, Jane and Bob. The walk in from the road, skirts round the south of An Teallach, with some great views, before dropping down to the bothy at Shenavall and our camping site on the grassy area below the bothy.

The MWIS weather forecast of 40 to 50 mph didn’t materialise – good news for walking those airy ridges, but not so good news for keeping the midges away. Saturday morning saw very hurried breakfasts and minimal time outside to avoid the biting beasties.

Saturday was fantastic walking weather. Robert, Iain and Bob set off early to do the Fisherfield 6 (or now 5+1 as one has been demoted from Munro status). This was a long (13 hour) outing but was well worth it for the stunning scenery, varied walking, and 5 Munro ticks. Robert had a magic flask with him for the journey – only small, but at every summit it produced a cup of warm coffee ! And I thought only Dr Who had a tardis !

The rest of the team (Alan, Gillie, Moira, Jane, Susan and Ruth) started the day fording the river.

The route up Beinn Dearg Mor curved up into the corrie on the south side, up to the fore peak, and then along the airy ridge to the summit.

The weather was warm enough in the afternoon for two intrepid members (Moira and Jane) to go for a swim in the loch, and fortunately there was a breeze to keep the midges away from the campsite in the evening. Ruth and Susan made an early exit on Saturday evening so they could do Sail Mhor on Sunday. The rest of the team had a leisurely start on Sunday and a walked out back to the cars, Alan and Gillie taking the longer path via Achneigie.

Fisherfield is a wonderful area – wild, remote and uninhabited with some fantastic mountains. Well worth a visit!
