Wonderful Weather in Crianlarich

12 – 14 August 2022

What a difference, after the storm hit Achmelmich trip, 8 DHCer’s at Crianlarich enjoyed a hot sunny weekend with temperatures of about 25 in the glens and 15 on the tops. Some even commented that it might be too hot to walk!

On the way over on Friday, Sandra and Alison climbed the munro Beinn Mhanach and Graham climbed the graham Creag Gharbh on the south side of loch Tay.

On Saturday Graham decided to tackle the corrugated iron gate and the single planked wire rope bridge on the route into the corbett Beinn Mhic Chasgaig in Glen Etive. He was relieved to find that these had been swept away by the access road for a new hydro scheme and there was even a sign welcoming walkers. He completed the hill but found the the ground conditions tough.

Sandra, Alison and Ken decided to tackle the munros behind the hostel in Crianlarich. They had a big day completing An Caisteal, Beinn a’Chroin, Ben Tulaichean and Cruach Ardrain. These are normally completed as two separate trips but with the fine weather they tackled the big drop of 460m between Chroin and Tulaichean. A fine day was had but the swarming flying ants were a nuisance in places.

Irene, Gail, David and Robert loaded up with water and food and headed to the 4 munros around Ben Lui. We positioned a car in Glen Lochy and then started from near Tyndrum in misty low cloud. The walk up through the remnant pine forest was lovely but it started to warm up as we climbed up through open ground to Beinn Dubhchraig.

Gail found the heat tough going so she and Irene stopped there and David and Robert headed to Ben Oss. We agreed to keep going on the big sweeping belach to the 400m ascent to Ben Lui. We left the crowds behind and worked our way up to Ben Lui without difficulty.

After completing Beinn Chleibh we headed down to Glen Lochy. The path in the forest went through a swamp but the river crossing was easy. A long day at 10.5 hrs.

Sunday saw Graham and Sandra head off, Alison tackle Meall a Bhuridh and Creise, Gail, Irene, Ken and David complete Beinn Challum, and Robert tackle Beinn Choinze.

A great weekend with a lot of hills walked.

Robert
